Our Story
As an affiliate of the National Black Child Development Institute (NBCDI), BCDI-DC represents the needs and voices of Black children in the nation’s capital. We are part of a national network committed to advancing equity and excellence in education, health, and family engagement for Black children and families across the country.
We strive to be a leading force in shaping equitable policies, delivering culturally responsive, impactful programs, and fostering a community where the aspirations of Black children are supported, nurtured, and fully realized.

Our mission at BCDI-DC is to empower Black children and their families through culturally relevant, research-based programs and advocacy for improved policies to ensure a brighter, more equitable future for every Black child in Washington, D.C.
Our Vision
BCDI-DC envisions a Washington, D.C., where every Black child has the opportunity to thrive, succeed, and reach their full potential. As the local affiliate of the National Black Child Development Institute (NBCDI), we carry forward a national legacy of advancing equity and excellence for Black children, while addressing the unique challenges and opportunities facing children and families in the District of Columbia.

In 2025, we prepared three issue-area snapshots that delve deeper into BCDI-DC’s 10 core areas of impact, offering focused analysis, key findings, and actionable insights. These snapshots are available to read and download, providing advocates, practitioners, and policymakers with accessible tools to better understand the challenges facing Black children in the District and the pathways toward meaningful change.
